There are over 10,000 children in the foster care system in Washington state alone. Nationwide, the median age of a foster child is 6 1/2 years old. The foster care system vastly underinvests in our foster youth - contributing less than half of what is costs an average American to raise a child between 0-17 years of age. More than half of foster youth have a job after four years after aging out of the system, and those who do earn an average income of $7,500. Less than 25% have access to a computer at home. The average foster child will lay their head down on 4+ new beds during their first year in the foster care system. Over 65% of children will have changed schools 7 times or more before finding their forever home.

Several years ago, Lisa Wiscomb recognized there was a great need in the community to support foster families and children. She was studying Psychology, with an ultimate goal to work with children, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was unable to continue her studies due to her treatment, but she never stopped working with children. She became a CASA worker, which is a sworn officer of the court to advocate for children who are living in foster care as a result of abuse or neglect. Her goal was to help children, and that she did. She founded Foster Champs, which began as monthly support meetings. These meetings were an opportunity to enjoy a meal, connect with one another, as well as receive training hours while volunteers were putting on fun activities for the youth. Lisa’s desire to serve the foster community, combined with her outgoing personality and fearlessness, was the start of something amazing. Foster Champs continues to grow and evolve, and we do this in honor of Lisa and her vision for a better future for foster families.

Without financial support and our volunteers, we would not be able to do what we do. Every donation, big and small, helps Foster Champs continue to serve our community. We are thankful each and every day for all of our donors.

Foster Champs is a 501(3)c, strictly volunteer based nonprofit organization.
